We researched an animal of interest using non-fiction books, focusing on their life cycle and adaptations. Afterwards, students created books, flow charts on Popplets, comic books or books to show their learning and presented them to the class.
This week we have started presenting our personal timelines and began looking at how people change over time. So far we have found many similarities!
Today we had some special visitors. Julie, Flynn's mom, came in and brought Archie, Flynn's cat. She answered our questions about the life cycle of a cat, adaptations, and told us about how Flynn and his family care for Archie and their two other cats. Do you know Archie knows how to shake a paw? He is one cool, laid-back cat!
Today for World Health Day we started the day with a school Mass Workout. Everyone congregated on the upper playground for some nice exercises to start the day. What a great way to start the morning!
We also had a fruit picnic, and did some meditation for mindfulness.
Happy World Health Day, everyone!
On Friday, the G1.2 did a presentation about mindfulness at the assembly.
To prepare for it, we reflected individually on events that make us feel left out, jealous, angry, sad and over-excited and how we normally respond. We then thought about ways mindfulness activities might be used to help.
After that, we formed groups, created scenarios around one of the emotions and wrote our skits.
Next it was time to practice, practice, practice so we could memorise our lines. We also practiced the song "Lean on Me" by Bill Withers.
Then it was time for the performance!
Chaitanya: Welcome to the G1.2 Assembly.
Isaiah: Today we will be talking about mindfulness.
Chaitanya: To begin with we would like to do a few short skits.
Freya and James are on the soccer field.
Freya: Can I be versus you?
Freya: I’ll find a ball.
James: I’ll go with you.
Freya: I’ve got one. Let’s play.
Freya and James play soccer for awhile. Flynn comes over.
Flynn: Can I play?
Freya: James, no!
Flynn: Why not?
Freya: We’re in the middle of a game. We already have two people.
Flynn sighing: Okay.
Flynn gets a ball and bounces it nearby.
Flynn: What are you doing after school? I’m going to stay and play on the playground for awhile if you want to …
Freya: Ssh. We are trying to play football right now.
Flynn: I was just thinking that maybe you could ask your parents…
James stopping, looks at Flynn: Can you move over there? We are trying to play football here and you are in our way.
Freya: Let’s play, James. Come on.
James: Okay. Lets do free kicks or penalties.
Freya: I’ll start the free kicks. Goal!
Flynn watches looking sad.
James: Okay, I’m ready. Shoot. Nope. You missed.
Freya: I’m hungry now. Do you want to go and get some ice cream?
Freya to Victoria: 2 scoops. One chocolate, one mint, please.
James to Victoria: 2 scoops of vanilla, please.
Freya to Victoria: And I’ll get one more banana and strawberry for my sister. Thanks.
Freya to James: Lets go back.
James: Yeah. Hey, there’s that boy that wanted to play football with us.
Freya to Flynn: Hey, are you all right?
Flynn: Yeah. I just don’t know anybody at this school. And I don’t have anyone to play with.
James: Oh, I’m sorry. And you are probably feeling a little left out.
Freya: What’s your name?
Freya: I’m Freya and this is James.
James: I feel left out sometimes too, especially when I first came to the school and didn’t know anybody either.
Freya: And I feel left out sometimes when my sisters play together and won’t let me join in. Yeah (sighing), sorry. We know how you feel.
James: Next time we’ll try to think more about your feelings.
Freya: Do you want to play football with us? Or we can play basketball with you? Oh, and I have an extra ice cream if you want it.
Freya, James and Flynn walk together off stage.
Narrator: Karin, Cesca, and Maanya are playing tag on the playground when Maanya falls and gets hurt.
Karin: Are you okay?
Maanya: No, I hurt my knee.
Cesca: Do you need help? Here I’ll take you to the nurse.
Karin: I’ll come too.
Cesca: It’s okay, I’ll help her.
Cesca helps Maanya limp off stage. Karin walks sadly away.
Narrator: A little while later…
Maanya talking to Cesca as they walk on stage: I’m so excited about tonight!
Karin walks over: What’s tonight?
Cesca: Maanya and I are having a sleepover! We are going to go swimming and watch movies… and…
Maanya: It’s going to be so much fun! And then next weekend, Cesca is coming over to my house and ….
Karin starts crying. She runs away.
Qaseh: What’s wrong?
Karin: Maanya is always playing with Cesca! She never plays with me anymore!
Qaseh: So you mean you are feeling jealous?
Karin: I guess. But it’s not fair!
Qaseh: Everyone gets jealous sometimes. I get jealous sometimes too. I get jealous when my brother gets a new toy and I don’t.
Maanya and Cesca walk over: And we get jealous too sometimes.
Cesca: I sometimes feel jealous when you are playing with Maanya.
Maanya: And I get jealous when my brother gets to stay up later than me.
Qaseh: Instead of crying, maybe when you feel jealous you can go for a quiet walk.
Maanya: Or take some slow deep breaths and then come and tell us how you feel.
Cesca: Sometimes I do some mindfulness colouring when I’m feeling sad. And don’t forget, we are all best friends!
(Maanya, Qaseh, Cesca and Karin skip off stage linking arms).
Narrator: It’s Darshan’s birthday. People come to his party.
Ameen and Jake arrive first.
Ameen and Jake give Darshan presents.
Ameen and Jake: Happy Birthday, Darshan!
Jake: Is anyone else coming?
Darshan: Yes, Justin should be here soon. What do you want to do first? Do you want to play 2 Square, 4 Square?
Ameen: Jake, do you want to go first?
Darshan and Jake start playing. Ameen is in line. Jake misses the ball.
Darshan: You lost, Jake. You’re out, Jake.
Ameen: I’m in, Jake! You missed it!
Jake getting upset: I know that!
Jake watches sadly as the two boys play back and forth for a while. A little while later, Justin arrives and joins Jake.
Justin: What’s wrong? Why are you so sad?
Jake: Because I lost 2 Square, 4 Square.
Justin: You can try again. Don’t cry.
Jake: But I’m not good at it. I never win.
Justin: You just need to practice more. Besides, everyone gets sad sometimes.
Ameen and Darshan notice Jake is upset and come over to join them.
Ameen: Sure, I get sad sometimes too.
Jake: You do?
Ameen: I get sad when my dad has to go away for a business trip.
Justin: And I get sad that my dad is in China.
Darshan: And I get sad when someone accuses me of doing something I didn’t even do.
Justin: Sure, we all get sad. Sometimes listening to music makes me feel better.
Ameen: I talk to my parents, friends or sometimes a teacher.
Darshan: Or sometimes it helps to do something you really like to do. What do you want to do next?
Jake: I don’t know.
Ameen: What makes you feel better?
Jake: Maybe doing some yoga?
Justin: I know! Why don’t we have some birthday cake?
Jake: What kind is it?
Jake: Oh good! My favourite!
Jake, Ameen, Darshan and Justin run off stage.
Darshan: Mom! Can we have cake now?
Elliot goes to the Science lab with his friends. There are a lot of books and machines.
Elliot: Come on, it’s almost time for Science. Did you do your homework?
Isaiah: Yes, but that last question was pretty hard.
Seheon: What are we learning today?
Elliot: I think we are doing some experiments today.
Dante: Cool! Look at all of this stuff! This is awesome! Have you seen this? (Running around) Look at this!
Seheon: Dante, stop.
Dante: This is like the coolest place (jumping up and down). I want to do this first! No, this!
Isaiah: Dante, try to calm down.
Dante: This is fun!
Elliot: I think we should sit down and wait for the teacher.
Isaiah: Dante, it’s not safe. Some of this stuff can be dangerous.
Dante: I LOVE Science! (Dante goes over and pushes a button.) Don’t worry I’m good at using machines!) The machine makes a noise and smoke comes out of it).
Seheon: Dante! Look! There’s smoke coming out of it now! That’s really not safe. (Turns it off)
Elliot: You need to calm down. You are really overexcited.
Dante: I guess. I just really love Science.
Seheon: I know we all get overexcited sometimes. I get overexcited sometimes when I come in from PE or playtime.
Isaiah: And I get overexcited sometimes if I have a play date.
Elliot: For me, it’s probably when I go somewhere really fun.
Isaiah: I’ve got an idea. We have a little time. Lets go for a mindful walk and calm down before class.
Seheon: Yes, if you love Science then you want to be able to learn.
Elliot: Lets go for a silent walk and listen for sounds.
Narrator: One day, Ryo, Leo and Chaitanya were playing on the ISS playground.
Ryo, Leo and Chaitanya are playing on the playground. Chaitanya hits Leo on purpose.
Leo getting angry: Ow! You hit me!
Chaitanya: It was an accident.
Leo: No, you did that on purpose!
Ryo: Are you okay?
Leo: I guess.
Leo: Chaitanya, I’m telling on you!
Chaitanya runs away.
Leo (screaming): Where is Chaitanya?
Ryo: I don’t know.
Leo: That’s it! I am so angry at him! I’m telling on him!
Narratior: A little while later…
Chaitanya: Oh, the bell has rung.
Chaitanya walks off stage. Leo and Ryo follow.
Leo shouting as he walks off stage: Ms Leah, Chaitanya hit me!
Ryo: Ssh. We need to line up quietly.
Leo: But I’m so angry!
Ryo: I know. We all get angry sometimes, but try to calm down.
Ryo: Maybe you could try some deep breaths?
Narrator: Later in class…
Leo: Ms. Leah, Chaitanya hit me! We were playing tag and he hit me!
Chaitanya: It was an accident!
Leo: No, it wasn’t!
Chaitanya: Yes, it was!
Ingrid: Okay, you both sound quite angry. Why don’t you breathe in slowly. And breathe out slowly. In. Out. In. Out.
Leo and Chaitanya nod.
Ingrid: Chaitanya, did you hit Leo?
Chaitanya: Yes, I hit him.
Ingrid: Was it on purpose or an accident?
Chaitanya: An accident.
Ingrid: Did you say sorry to him?
Ingrid: Did you offer to take him to the nurse?
Chaitanya: No, but I can take him now.
Ingrid: Okay, then go.
Ryo: Chaitanya, Leo and I were playing tag.
Narrator: Awhile later…
Chaitanya: Leo is sleeping in the nurse room.
Ms Leah: Okay.
Narrator: The next day…
Chaitanya: Do you want to play tag again?
Leo: Okay, but don’t hit me again.
Chaitanya: Okay, I won’t. I promise.
Ryo: I’m so glad we are all friends again!
Leo and Chaitanya: Me too!
Isaiah: So next time you are feeling a little nervous…
Chaitanya: Sad or scared…
Isaiah: Jealous or left out…
Chaitanya: Try doing a mindful activity, like taking some slow deep breaths.
Isaiah: Doing some mindful colouring or going for a mindful walk.
Chaitanya: Or do something you like, like yoga. Or meditation.
Isaiah: Actually I’m feeling a little nervous right now! Maybe I should do some meditation.
Chaitanya: Why don’t we all do it? Those people in the audience might want to do it too!
Flynn: Get ready to relax. Close your eyes, and take a deep breath in.... now breathe out. Breathe in.... and breathe out. Keep breathing slowly like this. Feel how it relaxes you to breathe deeply.
Darshan: Now squeeze your hands closed into fists. Pretend that you are squeezing a ball in each hand... Right now, your muscles are tense. And now relax. See how relaxed your hands feel. Relaxation is a way to make your whole body feel relaxed like your hands are now.
Flynn: One way to relax your body is by breathing deeply. Imagine that your body is like a balloon. When you breathe in, feel your chest and sides expanding, like a balloon filling with air. When you breathe out, imagine your body is like a balloon shrinking with the air being let out.
Darshan: Breathe in like a balloon being blown up. Now breathe out, like the air is being let out of a balloon. Let the air out by blowing the air through your mouth. Breathe in through your nose, imagining your body expanding like a balloon.... and now imagine letting the end of the balloon go, and the air rushing out as you breathe out through your mouth.
Flynn: Remember the difference between tense and relaxed. Tighten your leg muscles to make both of your legs tense. Squeeze tighter.. and now relax. Let your legs become very relaxed.
Darshan: Now tense your arms. Make the muscles very tight and tense. Tighter.... and relax.. Your legs and arms are relaxed.
Flynn: Now let your whole body become relaxed. See how relaxed you can make your body.... Relax even more by noticing your breathing again. See how calm your breathing is. In.... and out..... in.... and out...Keep breathing and simply relax. See how calm and relaxed you feel.
Darhsan: Now wiggle your fingers and toes..... move your arms and legs a little..... And open your eyes.
Flynn: We hope you feel awake, but still feel relaxed and calm.
Chaitanya: Thank you Flynn and Darshan. I feel much better now.
Isaiah: And now we would like to sing you the song, Lean on Me by Bill Withers.
Class sings song
Chaitanya: Thank you for coming to the G1.2 presentation on mindfulness.
Isaiah: We hope you enjoyed it. May you have a nice peaceful afternoon.
Thursday we invited parents in to join us for our Poetry Cafe.
We each chose two poems to read for our audience.
Afterward finishing our poetry reading, students read the rest of their poems to their parents.
This week we have been learning about research skills. We have been using a book's Contents and Index to locate information, and a book's glossary to define new words.
On Tuesday we went to the library and Ms Grant did a lesson on note-taking. We searched for important words and then closed our books and wrote sentences about what we had learned.
This week we started practicing for our assembly. Students are writing scripts demonstrating different emotions and offering suggestions about how people can use mindfulness to get through difficult situations. We are also singing the song "Lean on Me" by Bill Withers.
