Before the October break, we celebrated International Day at ISS. Here are some pictures from the day:
Amelia: For my Show & Tell, I'm going to talk about how I use teamwork at home. I brought in my pocket money math chart, because I use it in my house to help out and these are all the jobs I do.
This is how much I get this week. And it goes here.
And this is my name. Because here it says 'name'.
And they both have magnets on the back so they stick to the fridge.
And this is for my jobs. It goes here. It's for making my bed. This is for putting my clothes away every Sunday. And that goes here. It sticks. Next one, this is for helping to clean the house and there is a brush and cloth. That goes for every Sunday. And this goes on the bottom of the list here. This is for helping to set the table. And this one is for feeding my pets. And my hamster goes, I think, about here. This one is for putting my toys away and it goes on everyday. The last one, unpacking my school bag, this goes here. Any questions?
Olivia: What is on the top? What is the 'x'?
Amelia: Oh, you want me to explain the first part? The check is for doing my job and this is what I get for each job. And then there is the equals. That's what I get for the week.
Ms Leah: What is your favourite job and your least favourite job?
Amelia: My favourite is making my bed and my least favourite is putting my clothes away.
JiaRui: How much money have you saved in all?
Amelia: I think about $20.
For the past couple of weeks ISS had two teachers visiting from the Green Umbrella School in Cambodia, Karuna Kumar School: Ms. Sreymom and Ms. Dany. Ms Sreymom spent her two weeks in Grade 2, and Ms Dany spent the first week with Mrs Hayward's class and the second week with us.
Ms Dany helped us with our math, listened to us read, and gave us pointers on our writing and artwork.
She also taught us a little about her country, Cambodia, and the school where she works.
We watched a video and found many similarities and some differences with school life at ISS.
We really enjoyed meeting Ms Dany and getting to know her this past week. It was sad to say goodbye. We hope to visit her and her students in Cambodia one day.
Ms Leah shared a problem she is having this week. Last year she rescued a 10 year old community cat who got very sick. After bringing her to the vet and the vet couldn't do anything, she brought her home in the hopes she might recover there. And she did!
Now a year on, Sissy is a healthy, active cat who wants to spend all of her time playing and cuddling with her humans. Unfortunately, she is not too fond of the newest addition to the abode, Harvey, a rather crazy, energetic puppy. So she has been spending quite a bit of time in her room on her own.
Ms Leah asked us if we could work together and help her come up with a solution. Here we are brainstorming ideas together.
On Thursday members from SALT came to speak to us about Sports Day. They told us that plastic bottles are bad for the environment and asked us if we could bring our reusable water bottles to Sports Day instead. We wanted to help and committed to bringing our own water bottles. Afterwards we wanted to find out more about what the plastic bottles do to our environment.
Ray: It kills the fish.
JiaRui: Because they eat it. It ends up in their tummies. And they get sick. And sometimes they die.
Andy: And the birds too. Because they eat the fish. And it is bad for us too. Because we also eat the fish.
JiaRui: Because the plastic bags look like jellyfish.
Amelia: And sometimes they get caught on them, around their neck or something. Like turtles and birds.
Andy: We should use our regular bottles, because they are plastic but we can wash them and use them again and again.
Amelia: Or use other materials.
JiaRui: And when we use plastic, we should keep reusing it. Like we can always make something different out of it.
We learned the word non-biodegradable. We talked about what it might mean.
Andy: Like, it will be around forever and ever.
Olivia: Even when we are like grandparents.
Ray: It won't go away.
We then talked about biodegradable.
Ben: Well, 'non' means no. It should be it won't be around forever.
Andy: Yah, it will go away.
Ms Leah told us that a banana peel is biodegradable. She asked us whether we thought if we left a banana peel in the garden it would be around for, say, 100 years.
Andy: The banana peel won't be there in 100 years.
Olivia: Someone will clean it up.
JiaRui: The soil will be spoilt.
Ben: It will be very smelly. And it will turn black.
Irfan: Yes, it will be very smelly.
Ms Leah: Will it still be there in 100 years?
Other students: No.
We decided to try and find out. Andy brought a banana for snack and gave us the banana peel to try out our experiment.
Ray: But someone might take it away. So we need to make a small fence.
Amelia: And a sign. Asking them not to.
Ben: And find a quiet place where nobody is going to step on it and slip on it.
Friday was our ES Sports Day. We were a little worried when we were on our way to the stadium and it suddenly started pouring rain, but we broke into a soft chorus of "Rain, Rain, go away" and fortunately the skies had cleared by the time we reached the stadium and it turned into a beautiful day.

As Amelia is in the gardening ECA, she wanted to teach us about how to take care of the garden.
We read the book Couldn't We Make a Difference for Peace Day and learned the expression 'walking in each other's shoes'. Since we were planning a trip to the garden, we decided to try it out. Amelia would be the teacher, and Ms Leah a student.
Amelia showed us where the different plants were and taught us how to fill up the watering cans. She divided us into two groups: one group used the watering can and one group took turns with the hose.
Afterwards, we talked about what it was like to wear each other's shoes.
Amelia: I found it quite hard when some children were talking and not listening to me. I liked it when the children were listening to me so I could teach them.
Ms Leah: I liked it when I was able to hear you and learn about how to take care of the plants. I found it quite hard when I had to wait a long time for a turn to water the plants with the hose. Then we didn't have enough time so I didn't get a turn.
On Fridays after assembly we usually have some time to work on our own projects. We wanted to share them with you so we took some pictures and sent them to Ms Leah.

Today we talked about beliefs and actions. Ms Leah gave us a list of actions and asked us to work in groups and come up with the beliefs behind them.

International Day is on the 6th of October and it is quickly approaching! We are excited to share our cultures and celebrate together on that day. We would love to have as much parent involvement as possible and besides sharing the day with your children, here are some ways you can participate:
Country Display: We will be making the Elementary School hallway's display boards available to parents to decorate. Each board will be assigned a country and you are welcome to come by and decorate during the week of 2nd October - 5th October. If you are interested, please let Ms. Jasinska know by email which country you are representing so she can try to connect you together firstname.lastname@example.org
Food: One of the highlights of International Day is the food! Please feel free to share your national dish with us that day. You can bring it in the morning for it to be kept in a safe place while you participate in the fun. Later, each country will have a table where you can place your food and we can celebrate the wonderful cuisines of the world together.
