When we planted our banana tree, we found a 'worm' in the garden. On closer inspection, Johnny identified it as a millipede "as it has lots of legs".
We decided to bring it into the classroom for a closer look. We put it in a container with soil. The next day when we looked at the millipede we made the following observations:
Teddy: He looks a little bit dead because slime is coming out of him.
Claire: He's not moving. I think he's dead.
Griff: If there is slime, it is dead.
Teddy: I think it's because there's no food.
Lucy: It's a different color than yesterday.
Emma: Maybe it's just sleeping.
Arwyn: When I sleep I don't move much.
Griff: I think it's a millipede. It has lots of legs. Maybe it is sleeping. Maybe it's nocturnal.
Siena: The legs were all squished up.
Emma: It's dead.
Adam: Does it look smaller?
Lucy: To me it looks fatter.
Emma: I can see a mouth and eyes.
Teddy: Maybe it couldn't breathe.
Emma: Maybe it was too dry.
Claire: Maybe we should have given it water.
Arwyn: It's really wrinkled.
Johnny: It looks squishy.
Arwyn: It has dirt on it.
Siena: I think there are ants in the box.
Claire: I think the ants killed it.
Johnny: It looks like it got hurt.
Adam: It's smaller.
Johnny: Last time it was peach.
Arwyn: It smells weird. Like barbecue that is over-cooked.
Siena: Maybe it was sleeping and the ants came and killed it.
Griff: He twirled his body up.
Siena: It doesn't have a tail. Those are the legs.
Minzhe: I just wonder how the 'worm' died.
Griff: Below its chin there's a big thing like slime dripping down.
Arwyn: Maybe it's like its blood or something.
Siena: I think that's not the right habitat for the 'worm'. It would be like a desert without water.
Adam: There's a small rock on it. It's black. I think it's hiding. It might be angry.
Johnny: Maybe it's not the one. Maybe it's still in there.
Adam: It's a different color.
Lucy: Normally if you touch a bug and it's alive it will move. If it's dead than it won't, unless you've accidentally moved it a little with your finger.
Siena: Maybe it didn't have food. I wonder what worms eat.
Adam: I think he bumped his head.
Arwyn: Maybe they are dried up, because I've seen it lots of dead ones before.
Griff: I gave a worm water and he died.
Lucy: Maybe you gave too much water and it drowned.
Minzhe: Maybe it has not died yet. (Took a closer look). Oh, maybe it died.
We decided to research millipedes and see what we could find out.
We learnt that millipedes ARE nocturnal! We also learnt that they curl up when they are scared.
Griff: It is nocturnal! It was probably just sleeping then.
Siena: I know we could make the room really dark.
Johnny: Like it was on the dark day. You could cover all the windows.
Siena: And then if it was nocturnal, it would wake up.
Lucy: It was probably just all coiled up because it was scared.
Siena: Of ants.
Lucy: Or of us. It was probably scared of us.
Aubrey: Also, because it burrowed. They burrow when they are scared too.
We also learnt that millipedes like to live in moist soil and that they eat decaying leaves or wood.
Claire: We should put water in.
Siena: And some dead leaves. Because that's what they eat.
When we tried to observe our millipede the next day, we couldn't find it. It had mysteriously disappeared...
