We found a millipede in the garden and brought it back to the classroom to observe it. At first, it looked like an earthworm, but Johnny explained it was a millipede as it had lots of legs. Today we decided to take a closer look at it.
Teddy: He looks a little bit dead, because slime is coming out of him.
Claire: He's not moving. I think he's dead.
Griff: If there is slime, it is dead.
Teddy: I think it's because there's no food in there.
Lucy: It's a different color than yesterday.
Siena: Maybe it cut itself on here.
Emma: Maybe it's just sleeping.
Arwyn: Maybe. When I sleep, I don't move much.
Griff: Maybe it's sleeping, because it might be nocturnal. It's got to be a millipede. It has lots of legs.
Siena: The legs are all squished up.
Emanie: It's dead.
Adam: Does it look smaller to you?
Lucy: To me it looks fatter.
Emma: I can see a mouth and eyes.
Teddy: Maybe it couldn't breathe in there.
Emma: Maybe it was too dry.
Claire: Maybe we should have given it water.
Arwyn: It's really wrinkly.
Johnny: It looks squishy.
Adam: It's smaller.
Johnny: Last time it was peach in color.
Arwyn: It smells wierd. Like barbecue that is over-cooked.
Siena: Maybe it was sleeping and the ants came and killed it.
Griff: He twirled his body us. It's tail has gone all twisted.
Siena: It doesn't have a tail.
Griff: Then what is that coming out at the back?
Siena: Those are his legs.
Minzhe: Maybe it's not dead. (On closer look) Oh, yah. It's dead. I just wonder how the worm died.
Griff: Below its chin, there is a big thing like slime dripping from its chin.
Arwyn: Maybe it's like it is blood or something.
Siena: I think that's not the right habitat for it. It would be like a desert, without any water.
We decided to see if we could find out a bit more about millipedes by watching a video.
Griff: So it is nocturnal! It might be just sleeping then?
Johnny: I know we could put it in a dark box and see if it wakes up.
Griff: Or put black paper on the windows again.
Claire: And maybe it was at the bottom because it was scared and burrowed into the ground.
Siena: Because maybe it was scared of ants.
Lucy: Or scared of us.
Siena: But it usually lives in moist soil so maybe that soil is too dry and it died.
Shotaro: Lets try and put some water in it.
Arwyn: Maybe someone can take it home and look after it. It eats decaying leaves and wood. We can give it some.
Siena: Lets keep it and observe it a little longer. I'm not so sure now if it's alive or dead.
We decided to continue our investigations next week.
